This is a photo I took back in 2009. I uploaded it especially for the Bridges theme. As were were departing Port Everglades on the Westerdam, I could see all of the small boats taking advantage of the beautiful afternoon. The drawbridge is over the Stranahan River which flows into Lake Mabel (where our ship was) before becoming Port Everglades ship channel. Both are part of the Intracoastal Waterway. The roadway is Florida Highway A1A, called SE 17th Street locally.

The technical name for this type of bridge is a double-leafed bascule, which means it uses counterweights to raise each half of the bridge. The bridge is raised at the top and bottom of each hour.

Excellent timing and excellent for the bridge challenge!
