For the Hindu faithful, a parikrama (circumambulation) of the entire 1,312 km length of the Narmada endows oneself with eternal bliss. In Sanskrit Narmada literally means ‘One who endows with bliss’. According to a legend, the mighty Ganga (Ganges) is polluted by millions of people bathing in it. To cleanse herself, Ganga acquires the form of a black cow and comes to the Narmada to bathe in its holy waters. After a dip in the Narmada, Ganga emerges as a white cow with all her pollution cleansed.
