Today is a big day for Mr. Sheep! He gets to ride up front on his new owner's moped through the streets of Marrakesh. And to think that only a few days ago Mr. Sheep was living an uneventful life on a little field in the Atlas mountains.
Unfortunately, what Mr. Sheep doesn't know is that he's two days away from becoming Mr. Mutton. Friday is Eid Al Kabir, or roughly translated 'big party', to commemorate Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ishmael at Allah's command, a ram or sheep being ultimately substituted for the boy.
It is indeed a big party in the Muslim world, and the preparations up to the ritual slaughter are quite a sight. People selling hay and other animal feed are lining the steets, as are people selling BBQ fire starting blocs and grills. More ominously, knive sharpeners are doing brisk business everywhere.
