28 beaches on 2 harbours, packed into one city populated by 1.2 million people. That's Auckland. Most beaches are within a maximum of 30 minutes drive from the city centre. This iron sand beach felt deserted in the almost spring October storm. The beach is called Piha and was the site of many scenes in the movie The Piano. I like to come here in bad weather when the surfers and sun kissed young bellies aren't being promenaded up and down the sands. The wind in your hair, the damp sand underfoot, no city noise in your ears just wet salt and the vibe of the sea.
