This is the 126-year-old Alden House at the University of Virginia. It used to house students and faculty members associated with the McCormick Observatory, so it is situated in an area of near-complete darkness.

I first wandered down McCormick road, flashlight in hand, on a foggy night in October. Five minutes down the road, Alden House suddenly appeared before me, and I was overcome by a profound case of the chills.

I don't know if it's the style of the house or its remote location, but to this day, it continues to scare the hell out of me.

Something straight out of Poe's own imagination. Tremendously evocative.
