One Road Back

Just a few yards back from one of the main drives in Waikiki, two blocks from my old apartment by "Crack Alley", and a few feet from where my brother was mugged.

That's what they don't tell you in the travel brochure: "Watch you don't get mugged."

Waikiki sees about one mugging per night, at least. You don't hear about it. It's bad for business. And they don't publish the police blotter for a reason.

See a gang of "boys" ... maybe even girls, heading your way? Get out your cell phone and talk loudly so they see you are on it. Look them in the eye so they know you know they are there. Cross the street. If you can't, then turn as they pass you never taking your eyes off them until they have moved along because they prey on the element of surprise.

Or, just don't walk One Road Back.

In the story Crack Alley.
