Para la mayoría de la gente, respirar aire contaminado produce ojos rojos, una tos constante o la incomodidad por el mal olor. Para los atletas que competirán en los Juegos Olímpicos de Beijing el próximo año, podría significar perder una medalla, a menos que las autoridades cumplan con su promesa de limpiar el aire.

El índice de contaminación que mide la cantidad de sustancias peligrosas por metro cúbico usualmente llega a 25 en Londres y Nueva York. En Los Angeles, es de casi 40. Pero en Beijing, casi siempre sobrepasa 100.

En un día normal, la contaminación en Beijing quintuplica el nivel máximo que la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) estima como seguro.
