Traffic! New York Style---
A visit to New York City this past summer opened my eyes as to what “heavy traffic” can really mean. I took this picture on a sizzling hot day and the exhaust smell was overwhelming. New York employs public transportation extensively; even with that in mind the carbon emissions must be staggering. Twenty percent of all carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. come from trucks, buses, cars and other motorized vehicles; CO2 is a major factor in Global Warming according to many experts. These same vehicles contribute to about half of the annual U.S. oil consumption. Cars are also the primary emitters of carbon monoxide, a poison, as well as hydrocarbon emissions which cause smog, Addtionally they generate nitrogen oxide, a cause of smog and a contributor to acid rain.
