Ginkgo - a living fossil!
The fossil record shows that relatives of the Maidenhair tree were once common in southern Africa during the Triassic. There were at least seven species, all of which have gone extinct. Today only one living species (Ginkgo Biloba) is found in southeast Asia. In China and Japan many old and revered Ginkgo trees grow in temple gardens, some of which are estimated to be more than 3000 years old.
