Just like the wind mills of yesterday, the kind that draw water from the earth, these 1 megawatt wind turbine generators are taking advantage of a renewable, untapped resource. The WIND.

These windmills are a win/win situation. The power companies are happy because they have found a eco-friendly technology to generate electricity. Wind power has consistently remained at or below the average price of conventional electricity such as coal, nuclear, and natural gas.

The land owners are happy because they get paid royalties for the air rights. Around White Deer, Texas, a farmer can expect about a $4000 to $6000 check every month for the lease on a wind turbine. That is for just one turbine.

Another good thing is that you can still grow your crops around them. So no real loss in crop production plus the added bonus of being paid each month.

There is currently about 80 windturbines in White Deer, with more on the way.

For the past two years, Texas has been the top U.S. wind producer, with over 3,953 wind-generated megawatts (MW) installed. Texas is also the first state to achieve the milestone of one gigawatt of wind installations in a single year (2007), leading the nation in new wind power capacity installed (1,618 MW).
