what a beautiful find!

Dennis Blauer said (12 Mar 2008):
thanks Catherine! i have trained my eyes to spot skeletons and skulls of animals on the ground when i'm hiking. right now i'm curing a big tarpon skull, currently in the ants-pick-it-over stage, next to all day boiling in a giant pot to rid it of it's final fleshy film.

That is not only an impressive skull, but a great photograph! B&W perfect.

Dennis Blauer said (15 Mar 2008):
thanks Nelson! i debated about taking it in color because the wood box background is beautiful, dark, richly worn, chocolate wood.

That's a big skull. How do you prep it after the ants are finished? I used to soak the skeletons in bleach and water.
-
Dennis Blauer said (15 Mar 2008):
thanks May! i've never done a fish skull before. i'll only use the slightest bleach solution after i've peeled all large pieces of flesh off. if necessary, i'll repeat the process ten times to clean if i have to. with regualr skulls like these once usually does it, twice once in a while for a really fresh skull.
