A friend, and sometimes a life line.
Sometimes you have to ask for favors, ask them to let you take their picture even though you're scared to, but they always graciously agree, but suddenly they get nervous, wondering how it will turn out, they get tense and lose all the trust they once had in you.
So the only way to capture them is in their element, as a fly on the wall, with them doing something totally natural to them, as if no one were watching.
Suddenly they aren't scared anymore and despite the many years, you learn more about them than you had ever known from a single portrait.
Emotion can sure pack a punch.
