Stranded myself in Hongkong in 1959, I obtained a position photographing ads soliciting contributions for Catholic Charities. I spent three months taking shots of Chinese refugees in districts close to the China-Hongkong border. Uncomfortable at recording people at a dismal point of their lives, I did not keep most of my pictures. This is part of two I retained because they were symbolic of the struggle to survive.

My brow furrows at the sight, very moving and powerful. I am glad that moments like this are captured on film so that everyone should know the stuggle of the human condition whether it was years ago or 5 minutes ago.

If not for corageous individuals who captured these disturbing images, the world would not know bout them,..sadly this is still happening as long as governments and greedy self indulgent and ego maniacal people are in power....are we on a path to destruction?

    Haunting and provocative image.

Susan Sontag wrote that ""Narratives make us understand. Photographs do something else. They haunt us." It is certainly true of this photo. I don't think I'll forget it.
