Baby Composter

We make rich fertile soil at my housing co-op with our 3-bin composter system. With that dirt we plant flower and vegetable gardens throughout the grounds. The whole community gets in on the act - pictured here are my son and my neighbour. They are covering food scraps with dried leaves to keep fruit flies and odours at bay. Our co-op has been recognized by the Recycling Council of Ontario for the most significant overall achievement in waste reduction, reuse and recycling.

Love it!!! That's so great that the whole community bands together like that. I never thought about keeping the flies and odor under control like that. Does it work well?

First, it is very awesome that you guys are doing your part. Second, your teaching your little boy early to be environmentally conscious. Third, I just love your shots of your son. He's too cute.

I knew a boy who played the violin throughout his childhood then gave it up as a teenager. In university he got a degree in physics. Now a young man, he is the assistant conductor to the Boston Symphony. My son (pictured above) is now eleven and finds the compost rather disgusting! I mean to say: what they learn as children becomes a part of them and stays with them. Not that my boy should become the assistant composter to the Toronto Recycling Commission but he will no doubt find it less yucky and more noble when he is older!

So easy to captivate their interests when they are small..Your son will likely want to have the beauty of gardening at some point in his future..I read somewhere..and maybe u know..of people removeing plastic from a babies unused disposable diaper, takeing the fibers on the inside of the diaper and burying them in with their potted plants..The article stated the fibers will disinigrate and that they have polymeers that retain the water in the soil they are added too, requireing less watering.. I never tried it..but I wonder if it would work... Congradt,s on all your enviromentally active and helpful activities...
