It rises up about 60 ft. from the beach where I was standing. It is the ocean-facing front of the Ritz in Half Moon Bay, CA. I assume that the posts were sunk down into the sandstone long ago to provide strength to the ground above, but the pounding of the ocean has hollowed them out. One of the posts hangs freely in the air beneath the crop of this photo. If they are cement with rebar, perhaps the cement picked up a casing of the natural sand as it dried, making the exposed pillars look as if they were carved from the cliffs...
