This was photographed on the top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii during the lunar eclipse. The amount of detail in the sky from the eclipse is only available for 3 hours. The streaks on the side of the mountain are automobiles traveling back down from the summit.

Amazing color...how long was this exposure?
-
Andrew Hara said (18 May 2008):
Thank you for all of the comments!
A little technical tid bit-
The exposure was not that long (approximately 3 mins). I found that any exposure longer than 3 mins would start to blur the stars, and the exposure would have to be advanced to 10-20mins so that it would not look like a mistake (at 5mins). This was shot with a Canon 1DS-MarkIII at f/4 , ISO1600 with a f/2.8L 16-35mm USM II lens. -

Congrats on a spectacular shot. I recognized it immediately from my own visit there. Such an amazing sight, not quite capturable in a flat image.
