John Edwin May said (26 Apr 2008):
Sagan,
It is indeed a wonderful image.
You are using brutally, harsh, rude light extremely well. Unfortunately, there are so many interesting elements within the frame, you are loosing a great deal of attention of the man. For me, I am most interested in this person. I am interested in the way he is holding the sax, his hands, that ring on his left hand, his fingers on the keys. The shape of his face while playing the instrument is most revealing. The other elements in the photo are very distracting, beautiful, but distracting nonetheless. They are distracting because you used this descriptive light so well. Crop this image in half right down the center. You have two interesting images, but the image on the right with the sax-player is where it is! Even though I am not a huge fan of verticals, I would like this image to be rendered that way just to get that tip of his left foot were that possible. This image is just too tight for my tastes. Your subject and viewer cannot “move” within the frame. It gives the image an unwanted cramped feel. As far as the hat with the similar tilt as his head, the hat is in the background and should remain there. Your darken corners seem a little heavy-handed. I would think about darkening that light hat that is almost the same size as his head. Additionally, I would darken the suitcase and the shoes above the stark red case. I would not be so distracted with the left side of the image were it not for the reflection of the building. It just takes my attention away from the gentleman. Sagan, please take these comments as something to think about. This is NOT an attack, as some will assume. They will not know that you emailed me asking for my opinion. Feel free to delete my comment after you have seen it… or leave it up for others to think about. Your call!
My best to you!
John

Eric Abernethy said (30 Apr 2008):
Interesting comments by Kevin D. and John E., they are both right, good constructive criticism. I personaly love a busy picture and would have cropped the image like you did. It reminds me how Norman Rockwell used to paint really busy paintings. I love to look around and find all the smaller woulds in photographs and a busy window has those smaller worlds.
-
.:Sagan:. Anthony said (30 Apr 2008):
Here is my response to all of the great comments:
I like to shoot a "feeling," not an object. To me the sax player picture portrays a lifestyle, bringing out the fact that nothing is more important than music, and the open box shows that he can't pay for what he has by himself. It's about his passion, his lifestyle, and honestly if the picture was cropped to just him, it would still be interesting, but all of that feeling would be lost and it would just be another "good" picture, and you wouldn't know anymore about him besides the fact that he plays saxaphone. Thank you all for the great constructive criticism, it's well appreciated! -
