My wife recently bought me "Seeing Charleston: a field guide to photographing a world-class city" by Ron Anton Rocz and one of his suggestions was "Silhouettes: meter the light in the far background, e.g. a sunrise with color. This will cause the foreground subject matter to appear black…use the spot meter feature." I have no idea if I spot metered this or not, but I can see my sensor needs cleaning.
