  Why, indeed Nelson? unless they believe that an afterlife of some sort exists and faith or works will improve thier lot, maybe not unlike getting good grades as a teenager will help in the quest to get a good college education? Hectoronius, i am reminded by your comment of a song by Carole King from the Tapestry album, begins like this -"You've got to get up every morning, with a smile on your face; and show the world all the love in your heart..."!
