Spring Tassels
Late afternoon sun on wild grass tassels.
The grass is Pennisetum setaceum, or fountain grass, a native of northern Africa. It is a popular ornamental in xeriscaping because of its hardiness and the beauty of the inflorescence.
Unfortunately, it has also invaded fragile riparian areas in Arizona and the delicate ecosystems of Hawaii. In the wild it is an extremely invasive pest, choking out native species and creating a real fire hazard during droughts.
