The assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy signaled the beginning of a dark era in the United States. Or, perhaps it simply lit the spark that illuminated an inherent darkness, an ache and a corruption that had been there all along. Today, we look back and see a haze, a spiderweb of clouds whitening the sky. No idea where the sun lies behind the opacity. And we look forward and we see convections and more haze and fog, the blur of a future made uncertain by a system of government and a way of life based on . . . allegedly.
Plaque on the former School Book Despository from which Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired the bullets that killed Kennedy. Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas. May 20, 2007.
