Nilgai (Boselaphus tragocamelus)

Metro Dade Miami Zoo – Miami, Florida.

Also referred to as the “Blubuck” the Nilgai is the largest species of the Asian Antelope. They are found in the forests of India and Pakistan. Males have a dark blue grey coat and short hornes while the females are light brown in color. They are still fairly common in their native habitat because they are rarely hunted. The Nilgai resemblance to the Sacred Cow in the Hindu religion offers it some imunity from persecution. Females will give bith to a single or often twin calf after an 8-month gestation.
