Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla)

Miami Metro Zoo – Miami, Florida

Gorillas are the largest member of the Ape family. Throughout Africa, they live in extended families called a troop led by a Silverback Male. Matured males are referred to as Silverbacks because the hair on their back develops a silver-grey characteristic at about 12 years of age; after sexual maturity at age 7. Troops spend their day foraging for fruits, leaves and various plants throughout their territory. These gentle gians are endangered due to poaching and habitat destruction. Families give birth to a single offspring after a 9-month gestation.
