One of the largest of it's kind in the world. The massive "Dune 45" is one of the star dunes of Sossusvlei,Namibia. It's name comes from the fact that it is 45km from Sesriem Canyon and not because it is between dunes 44 and 46. Standing at over 180 metres high, it is composed of 5 million year old sand that was carried the long distance from the Kalahari by the Orange River to it's present location in the Namib desert.
There are a lot of similar dunes in the same area. Dune 45 stands out and has become a major tourist attraction. It is easy to climb and very photogenic, especially in the early morning before dawn where groups of tourists arrive and climb the dune so that they can see the sunrise over the beautiful red coloured desert and dunes.
