The Unexplained Self of the New Amazonian

Can you really speak to dolphins?

Can you tell me where the birds will fly?

Will a jaguar really let you borrow its eyes so you can see in the jungle at night?

The New Amazonian is not waiting to be discovered, and has no desire to share her powers with the civilized world. She has read the headlines, and if they are not disgusting they are at least repulsive.

She sleeps in a flower.

Dreams in rain.

Hunts for herself.

Shooting an arrow at an airplane was a mistake, and now the bow and quiver lie ignored in a temporary camp while her tribe debates. Stay, or flight?

These people in the jungle, unknown but potential for study and profit, bejeweled with medicines for impotence and fear, living in the time of the forest without happy hour or Tom Cruise, come into our focus and become targets. The race ends where their footsteps begin.

Look, says the scientist, we must know everything even if we kill everything we know. It’s a rule of science.

Amazonian woman with eyes borrowed from a jaguar, stalking her way through the purple night of the Amazon, choosing between poisoned petal and dreamy thorn, needs no science or schedule, because she lives by the rules of being.

Can we really not remember how we were? Are these memories of being wild not imprinted deep into our DNA, viral instincts of having been and becoming? Do I not have the space and resources to give without condition to my wild cousin?

+ + + + +

The New Amazonians allowed themselves to be shot for the first time in an artistic experiment called “Make the Dress,” organized by Mr. T and Mrs. T, whose workshops are featured in the current JPG Magazine.
