When I took my first trip to Africa, I wanted to come away with the perfect, National Geographic-like “African Tree standing on the savannah” shot. You know the one, a statuesque tree silhouetted by a fiery-hot African sun – complete with heat waves of distortion.....
Well, the country I went to was Malawi Africa, and it’s not like the Serengeti. While it can be hot there, it’s mountainous with rolling fields of tea. This lone tree caught my eye because it stands there all on it’s own, and over the next year-and-a-half it became the model for my “African Tree on the savannah” shot. This picture was the first one I shot, and it still captures my attention as it did on the day I first saw it.

Beautiful shot, I'm clueless with botany, but is this what is called "The Queen Tree?" It really has that classic shape of every sketch of Africa's wilderness.
