Sunset Piha Beach.
Piha is just 40 mins drive from Auckland Central. Much of the last 20 minutes is a winding drive through re-estblished native bush. Many of the original Kauri trees were logged in the 1800's, valued for their strength and height many were used as masts on Victorian ships. (Our house is made of solid golden Kauri.) A few stately Kauri remain. Their girth incredible, their age even more so.
Piha's black iron sanded coast faces West towards Australia. Much of our rain arrives from this direction. Water catchments are located in the valleys of the hills behind the beaches.
