Q: My sister in-law recently gave me a Canon EOS 10D digital camera body. Having only used point and shoot cameras, what would be a good beginners lens to get for this camera? Should I get kit lens to start with?

A: Do you know?

I am curious about the backstory to this photo. It looks WWI vintage! Must have taken some elaborate planning. Please inform us!

Thanks so much for the positive comments. I'm glad you all enjoy it. Andrew, I recently had the same question about the companion piece to this one. I will copy and and paste the response I gave.
Not much of a story. It is from a military reenactment, this one was WWI. There were trenches set up and people dressed in period clothing with equipment and weapons of the time.
I just try to give the image a vintage look that would be appropriate for the period. This man is the same one in one of my other photos, "The Stare." I think his "look" contributes so much to these photos. He has a certain believability that adds to his role.
Thanks for your comments and I'm glad you enjoyed this shot.

You know Fran, I have seen hundreds of photographers who attempt "period-looking" shots. Almost all fail miserably and fool no one but the most photographically (or historically) ignorant.
Your work is an exeption to that. This portrait, and the one of the doughboy with the Chauchat light machine gun are magnificent. Well done.

Thank you Andre for your kind words. When I do a period piece one of the challenges is matching the photographic "look" of that era. The upside is I get to study a lot of old photos, something I've always enjoyed.
