They both seem to be getting ready, but at the final stages of preparing to go out, they are both adjusting something. Him, his next tie. Her, her make up. Then of course there is the under layer of tension as if, psychologically, they are adjusting to some kind of circumstance.

I also find the word adjustment is a very sharp word, you almost have to hiss to say it. In this context it could be said through clenched teeth and in spite.
