Wat Pho, a center of education for traditional Thai medicine, and one of the oldest temples in Bangkok, houses the Reclining Buddha, an enormous gold statue measuring forty-six meters long. The reclining position indicates the moment at which the Buddha attained enlightenment. The effigy is gold plated with mother of pearl inlaid into the Buddha’s eyes and the soles of his feet. Wat Pho has the distinction of housing this Buddha, the largest in Thailand, as well as 1000 images of Buddha throughout the grounds of the temple.
