My favorite photograph from Afghanistan. This father traveled 8 hours by mule to bring his mentally retarded son to us for a checkup. While many people look down upon the mentally retarded in this country and some family members are ashamed, when I asked if I could take their photo the father immediately stood up, putting his hand on his sons head and his chest swole with pride. This moment made me miss my family more so than any other during my time away.
In the story Military Advisory to the Afghan National Army.

Geraldine, this is purely my view of the Army. The photos have not been vetted by any one within the organization except myself. I took more than 5000 photos during my year in Afghanistan and the vast majority I cannot post because they show things that I don't care to share publicly. War is ugly and dangerous not just for Soldiers... it's amazing what toy mines left behind by the Russian Army years ago can still do to children...

A wonderful shot and story. I know what you mean about war being ugly. I was in Nam in '67-68. I appreciate what you are doing. God be with you.

I think I can't know what you mean because I've never been around "soldiering"
but I appreciate what you are doing and how you are doing it.

This is an amazing image. I'm one of those Americans who is not real crazy about how we've used our military the past seven years. But this photo and your description shows me you're sincere and makes me proud that men and women such as yourself are serving. Thanks a million.
