Gardening, Sylvania Project, 2007
An exploration of uncommon co-habitation, Nicole Akstein's Sylvania; No. 37 reconsiders the idea of family, challenges perceptions of sexuality, and reshapes the boundaries of voyeurism. This body of work spans two years depicting the two men and Akstein integrated into their lives. Their living situation, however, may be considered unusual - two males in their early fifties, sharing a mobile home - by a society that deplores any suggestion of homosexuality and dismisses any thought of the impoverished. This conceptual project consciously drives to express the ambiguity that surrounds her function and presence in their home, ultimately allowing parallel roles to emerge.
