Anorgasmia: A condition characterized by the inability to achieve orgasm. Not to be confused with lack of libido or impotence. May be caused by a number of psychological factors, physical problems such as injury, or - as in my case - the side effect of medication.

Yes, to the great support group we call life I ignominiously proclaim "Hello, my name is Mormon Scientist and I have anorgasmia!"

I am one of the less than one percent of men who take Lexapro with this debilitating and anxiety producing side effect. Thankfully, I am already taking Lexapro for the anxiety so the situation is sort of self-medicating, I guess.

Actually, this is my first adventure with anxiety, it's treatment, and side effects. I am learning a lot. All of this started a few months ago when I began to have bouts of anxiety and panic attacks. These were the real deal: hot flashes, dizziness, chest pain, vomiting. All of this compounded by the stress of grad school. I finally went to see the doctor, for the chest pain, and went through a whole expensive ordeal before concluding that I wasn't having massive pulmonary emboli. In the end, it was found that my sole problem was anxiety which was compounded by my hypochondriatic nature.

My doctor prescribed me Klonopin (a medicine commonly prescribed for epilepsy that basically turns me into a vegetable) for emergency panic situations and Lexapro (which I just recently started taking).

So here I am, with as much libido as when I was a pimply seventeen year old, and the anti-impotence of a viagra user. Yet I can't get the job done. On the other hand I am as serene as a spring morning; so much so that I have started to pause and take pictures of the beauty around me. I took this lovely picture of a pink flowering tree with my cell phone on my normally brisk walk to the doctors office.

Almost all of the pictures I take are candid shots with my phone camera. The immediate availability and discreetness of the cell phone make taking natural people pictures seem... natural.
