Speedy and Sexy

Zonda Headliners

On a warm spring day in Tuscany I fell in love with a red-hot Italian. And I'm talking literally red and hot in the sense of a streamline body capable of reaching 230 mph. Never thought I'd write this about a sports car, but then I'd never heard of, much less seen a Pagani Zonda until a few days ago. I not only got to see one, but a dazzling lineup of twelve in the parking lot of Borgo La Bagnaia, the five star resort near Siena where the owners of the these Zondas stayed while participating in the 2009 International Pagani Gathering.

The Pagani Zonda is produced in Modena, Italy, where most of the world's great supercars, including Ferrari and Lamborghini, are manufactured. Horacio Pagani, founder of Modena Design, worked closely with the late Juan Manuel Fangio, five-time F1 champion, in developing the Zonda. Horacio, born in Argentina, designed and built his first F3 racer at age 20. As his popularity grew he befriended Fangio. When Fangio learned of Pagani's desire to work in Modena, he wrote him a letter of introduction that eventually led to the start up of Modena Design, a firm specializing in carbon composites and engineering. The firm's first product was the Zonda C12 that debuted in 1999.

In 2005 the Zonda F was unveiled at the Geneva Auto Show. This special edition is one of the fastest supercars ever made. Considering the price of a Zonda can range between about $350,000 US and $740,000 US, it's not surprising there are only about 100 in the world. That I not only got to see a line-up of twelve, but photograph them puts that moment among the highlights of my year in Tuscany. And now I get the added pleasure of sharing photos of the red-hot Italian I fell for in the heart of Tuscany.
