Before classes started last semester my professor pulled each of us aside one by one so he could learn a little more about each student. He talked to us and asked us a series of questions. He wanted to know if we shot more with film or digital, what brand of camera we shot with, etc. I told him I was primarily a Canon film shooter. Next thing I know he says, "do you want a new camera?" Of course I jumped on the offer and said yes. The next day he sets a cardboard box down in front of me and I could not believe what was inside. A Canon A1 in immaculate condition with a motor drive, a Canon Speedlite 199A, three lenses (50:1.4, 28:2.8, 28:2.8), and a leather cover case for the camera. There was no way he could be giving this to me so I asked him what he wanted for it. All he said was "don't ever sell it and when you are finished shooting with it give it to someone else." I was in complete disbelief.

A couple weeks later I took a trip to New York and brought the A1 to run it through it's paces. It worked like a dream. The camera never left my neck (aside from sleep) and I had the strap burns on my neck to prove it. I brought back some of my most favorite work from that trip. A couple months later I took month long trip to Europe and brought the A1. Again it worked flawlessly and helped me produce even better work than before.

This isn't some camera my teacher pawned off on me cause he didn't want it any more. This camera showed me that I was trusted with something very special. I don't think I will ever give this camera away until I am fully incapable of taking photographs. My Canon A1 is my precious and it is never leaving my side.

Great story. What a great way for your teacher to share his passion. I'm confident one day you will find the same desire to pass on the same passion. Thanks for sharing this story. The photos are awesome.
