Can't Hide a Street Kid

I went to high school with this model and have grown to respect her more and more each year. Ivy is an artist herself; She is a painter, a comic book artist and has one of the most unique styles I have ever seen. Even years later she continues to progress at Savannah Institute of Art and has even begun to freelance in other creative outlets such as Cigarette Girl, a Memphis area independent film.
One of my fondest memoriest of her is from when our school was holding the annual Miss OHS event where one female from each creative or performing arts department would put together a performance to compete for the title of Miss OHS. Ivy was nominated as the face of the drawing department as expected.
On performance day, she came out onto the stage with the most elegant dress I had ever seen; She looked beautiful! However, even with the dress on, you could see the street kid, artist attitude shine right through. Even then when she didn't have the tattoos or piercings, that alternative edge was immediately recognizable. It became even more apparent when she took out a vintage guitar and sang an old grunge punk song as her competition piece!
I wanted to do a photo shoot with Ivy that was more elegant than her normal attire, but still had the rough elements I normally associate with her. The idea here was to have her wearing a elegant gown, but keep the green hair, half shaved head, piercings, tattoos, combat boots, cigarettes, lighter and attitude. The garbage can and dumpster idea came after and fit perfectly!
We took all of these elements and created a scene using the very same dress from the Miss OHS event to contrast the two themes. To me, it kind of shows how no matter how you dress one up, the street kid in the individual just can't be hidden.
