On Saturday July 18th, 30,000 people from around the world gathered to participate in the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk. When fellow JPGer Martin Morris told me about it, I was a bit hesitant to join. I live in the Middle Georgia area and I must admit I am not a big fan of Macon. There are people around the world with much more beautiful scenery than Macon could ever offer. The time of the walk was scheduled for 5:00 p.m. which is an awful time for light and the heat is at its peak. I mentioned the walk to a few fellow camera club members and friends and we decided that we were up to the challenge.

Our walk started out at our famous Rose Hill cemetery and continued along a few of the historic streets in downtown Macon. Rosehill is a very old cemetery covered in beautiful stone works. Several famous people are buried there and it is a huge photography attraction. Many workshops are held there throughout the year. Macon's downtown streets are covered with beautiful homes that only the south can offer. Those beautiful columns and verandas that grace the streets with laid back southern style. Flowers and trees invite you into the immaculate yards. They encourage you to kick off your shoes and visit awhile. We all finished our walk and gathered at Zaxbys in downtown Macon. It was a lot of fun gathering after the walk and talking about photography and of course, JPG.

I had a blast!!! There is nothing like shooting with friends to liven up any occasion. And despite the light, I think I pulled off some pretty good shots. I had forgotten that scenics were not quite my style anyway. It is those up close and personal shots that I love. So finding a shade tree and shooting flowers felt so natural to me. And the return to Rosehill at 7:00 made all the difference in the light. I look forward to next year's walk and the friends I will meet there in a new city.

Thank you Martin for thinking about me.

I was part of the Photowalk this year in Asheville, NC, and one of my photos from that walk is in the "Ant's Eye View" category. Great essay, by the way!

The most important thing I have learned since being bitten by the photography bug is that there is always something to shoot. It may not be spectacular, but Nature is at work everywhere. Each location has its own unique flavor. Macon has some beautiful sites and sights. You captured them beautifully. Fabulous story!! voting
