As a photographer, I capture the full range of both emotions and environments. I am able to see so much more from behind my lens then anyone else. Having the ability and privilege to be trusted enough to be part of someone's world is a gift. As an artist, I know all too well how much you can live inside your head, and to be invited in to view and photograph that is really indescribable.

I have photographed well known musicians, unknown musicians, and everything in between. Through it all, I have always been drawn to the independent musicians most. I believe it's because as independent artists, we come from a similar background of completely pushing ourselves and our art every single day with little help. No backers, tour buses, sold out venues, or chart topping hits.

This is where the idea for Musicians | Volume 1 developed from: the need to show that there are wonderfully talented musicians and bands out there that push and struggle every day to have their music heard. They don't do it for the uncertain promise of glamour, money, or rows of screaming fans. They do it because they have to. They have to create in order to live and breathe.

This first installment features nineteen solo musicians and bands from across the United States, with a specific focus on the musicians from my hometown of San Diego, California. While all the musicians involved are of a wide variety of genres, they all have common ground; music is life and without it there would be no purpose.

This is a raw and honest project with no staging or photoshop. I photographed my subjects as truthfully as I saw them through my camera, and I strived to capture what they are and what they need to be seen as. My hope is that the viewers of this project will see exactly what I do...life, love, desire, and the need to be.

- Kevan Christine

All portraits in this exhibit were shot on Fujifilm Neopan Acros 120 black & white film using a 1958 Yashica Mat LM camera, Sekonic Studio Deluxe exposure meter and available lighting. No flash of any kind was used.

An accompanying book to Musicians | Volume 1 featuring the exhibit photographs as well as each participating musician and band's answers to the question "Why Music?".

Volume 1 is the first installment of this series. Volume 2 will be released for exhibit in mid 2012.
