The Patriots
"Red, White and Blue Flag, Wave for me baby"
Westerville's Bravest

I typically struggle when it comes to showing my patriotism. This could be attributed to some of my anger towards the US government (dishonest politicians, greedy business men running the country, fighting unnecessary wars IMO), but when 9-11 rolls around I can't help but become a huge patriot! That day is one I will never forget, fourth grade, on the way back from gym class, my favorite teacher Mrs Drexel had the tv on. At the time I had no idea what significance this had on me or my country, but eight years later I have a much better grasp upon what happened. Although there are still many mysteries surrounding 9-11, I acknowledge the fact that someone evil orchestrated something terribly evil upon my country, our country. For this we Americans owe to honor those who sacrificed everything for their country. Here is my story on the 8th anniversary of 9-11.

On september 11th 2009, I went out running errands, passing by the local firehouse, I saw a large gathering of people. So I stopped to check it out, and I thankfully had my camera bag with me. Fire fighters, Policemen, Paramedics were all speaking about there memories of the September 11th attacks. The city of Westerville was also given a piece of steel from one of the twin towers. The city was overwhelmed with joy to receive such a devout piece of US history. Many of the onlookers touched the gift and closes their eyes. I asked one man, "what were you feeling in your mind", he responded, "an overwhelming sadness, I could feel the pain and suffer that thousands felt that day". The ceremony was heart warming, patriotic, and of course tear jerking. Many, like me, went on about their business the rest of the day, and so did all the men and women of the Fire, and Police department who deal with life threatening jobs, but everyone, today remembered the day eight years ago that shook our nation. I felt very patriotic that day, being amongst my cities bravest and finest. My older brother reminded me to always remember 9-11, but to also remember that everyday people suffer from famine, disease, war, poverty, suicide, and hatred and they to deserve our compassion. I am so lucky that I live in a country where I CAN express my views and I WONT be persecuted for sharing them with my fellow Americans. I take it for granted way to often and I hope seeing that chunk of steel everyday will be a reminder that we, as Americans can over come anything. With that being said, God Bless America, and let freedom ring!

I chose the theme, Heroes because on that horrific day the men and women of the NYPD, FDNY, Paramedics, Armed Forces and anyone who was in NYC was a hero, and having a memorial is the slightest thing we can do for those heroes
