2009 Veterans Day Parade On The Way
By Zerina Phillip
23 Sep 2009
The parade has been organized in New York back in 1929 and was called Armistice Day before becoming Veterans Day.
The Veterans Day Parade begins on Fifth Avenue at 23rd Street in Madison Square Park, and continues north along Fifth Avenue to 59th Street. The Veteran's Day commemoration begins with a wreath laying ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Eternal Flame in Madison Square Park with the parade beginning at 11 A. M
This parade is the largest of its kind in the nation, and provide an opportunity for New Yorkers and visitors from across our country (and around the world) to honor those who have preserved our freedoms. "Blessing of Liberty," The 2009 parade theme, mirrored the ambition of our Constitution and pays tribute to veterans of all eras. We encourage the public to support our veterans and military, show gratitude to the men and women that risk their own lives. Be obliged to those in uniform.
This year parade is very special; it marks the 90th Anniversary, and the end of the First World War. This year over 50,000 veterans and people would participate, and the viewing audience of over 500,000.
The United War Veterans Council (UWVC) produces this parade. "The United War Veterans Council of NYC (UWVC) works to ensure that the public is constantly reminded of the sacrifice and service of our veterans and military. Our initiatives play a crucial role in achieving public support for the many important programs that benefit these men and women and their families." Please show your love and support to our soldiers.
I volunteer as a photographer with the United War Veteran Council because it is a great way to use my talent. I watch through my viewfinder and see the smiles on the faces of our fellow veterans.

Z, this is such a great article. It means so much to me, on a personal level. My father grew up in Great Neck, on Long Island, and he often spoke of New York's Veterans' Day Parade. He remembered seeing the Civil War Veterans (what few there sill were, in the 1930s). Many thanks and congratulations.
