Devastation in Funchal, Madeira

Downtown, Funchal, Madeira

20/02/2010, Funchal, Madeira.

The rain began on the night before and did not stop until the end of the next day. It was around 11:00 in the morning when I woke up to discover that there was no water or electricity. Then, the phone began to ring ceaselessly. Family and friends, worried. I had slept quietly and did not know anything.

During the night, it rained as it had not rained for decades. 132 liters of water per cubic meter had swept tons of stone, mud, cars, houses, people...

The downtown right outside my house was destroyed. Roads torn and streets covered with mud, stones and all kinds of garbage.

So far it is estimated that 42 people lost their lives, 18 are still missing and 600 were displaced.

Without water, electricity or any means of communication available, information is scarce and confusing. People come to the street to try to understand what actually happens.
