American Wrestler

Untitled 3, American Wrestling

My work focuses on marginal groups on the fringes of American society. The images submitted are from a series entitled American Wrestler. They depict men from an underground amateur wrestling league in Texas. Each Sunday, in the windowless stock room of a Mexican bazaar, these men compete for a weekly championship title. In contrast to professional wrestling leagues which are driven by corporate sponsorship, these men are wrestling purely for the love of performance and sport.

Absolutely wonderful. In my opinion, exactly the kind of work that shouldn't just be showcased, but published too. Makes us all try a little harder.

I agree: excellent images. You captured this spectacle in the raw. Very clever use of vignetting: focusing on the emotion and making it timeless.
