My husband agreed to do a Scrabble series with me for a week...We used the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary Fourth Edition and the two letter word sheet to help us in this game to either check on the spelling or to learn a new word that we did not know existed in the English language. I also have included a couple of games with scores here on this essay as an example of what the tile board looks like at the end of the game.
Sometimes it can be difficult to make a word out of the tiles that we select out of the bag. We may get all vowels for instance. In that situation we have the option to pass our turn and trade in our tiles for new ones. We allow ourselves 7 tiles for each time we play. If we get rid of all 7 tiles to make a bingo then we add 50 more points to the score that we made...The game really becomes challenging at this point for the other player to keep up.
In my opinion it is more fun to have a good playing partner than it is to win every game. My smart husband won 5 games out of 7 in the week that we did this series. I set the timer on 10 seconds to record a variety of expressions on our faces and I thought the results were interesting. One of the new words that I learned while playing the game is "phiz"...which means facial expression.
No matter how old or how young a person is, we need to keep on learning in life and it is beneficial to express ourselves with new words...but most importantly of all is to remember them.
I hope that our game series will inspire others to play, have fun and to learn. Sometimes I even play Scrabble by myself to keep in practice.
