Role of the Dice

When we were younger, our social life was mired in the intricate, nerdish world of the role-playing game.
On rainy days, during school holidays, we gathered around dining room tables, and delved into other lands for days, sometimes even weeks.
We were paladins, we were conjurers, we were rangers on a landscape of pencil and paper - a netherworld that was dreamed up by the dungeon-master.
The sound of the 20-sided dice roll, the smell of a new tome of rules, the thrill of the fighter/magic-user/thief (the best character combo of all!)...
In waking life, we sought the places through wardrobes, rabbit holes and hidden paths that might lead to our Narnia, our Greyhawk, our Middle-Earth.
Back then we carried our trusty "+1" penknives, just in case. Now I'm always armed with my camera, and the road goes ever on...
