Children of War

In February 2007 I accompanied a platoon of soldiers from the Minnesota National Guard as they searched a small Iraqi village for weapons.
The military operation was routine, these soldiers have been doing this six days a week, for almost a year. But for a photojournalist the children were striking.
The children seemed oblivious to the gravity of what was happening around them. Their innocence and curiosity gives me a hope that common ground and peaceful solutions can be found to seemingly intractable problems.
Many of the American soldiers are parents of young children themselves, and several of them said that the children are the one thing that gives them hope that what they are doing is worthwhile.
