Nature at its best: Series 9 - Sibuyan Island...the Calapagos of Asia

Sibuyan Island Philippines

This islet at the central part of the Philippines has the densest forest reserve area, most diverse wildlife and the cleanest river system in the country. Sibuyan is also the home of the majestic scissor-toothed peaks mountain, Mt. Guiting-guiting and the very rare flowering plant known as Nephentes Sibuyanensis. In 2007, Sibuyan became a front page sensational item in various Philippine daily newspapers brought about by the controversial mining exploration activity in the area.

A local teacher, Mr. Mazzinie "Udon" Romero inspired to write a beautiful Filipino song entitled, Mina (Mining) that tells us the importance of the island to Sibuyanons and the long-term negative impacts of mining to the livelihood and the environment.

I. Ibinigay ng diyos sa ating biyaya,

Sibuyan pinagpala,

Akoy nagtataka,

Kung bakit dumating ang pagmimina sa talaba

Refrain

Mapapansin kaya mina lang ang sisira,

Kung kakampi ko ang lahat,

May pag asa pang di magigiba

Chorus

Awit na nananawagan,

Dasal sa dios ay pakinggan,

Sa kanya lang ang sandigan,

Kung lahat ng taoy magkaisang pigilan

III. Pagpalain mula sa langit,

Katarungan syang makakamit,

Kung may pagkakaisa,

Mananalo tayong lahat

IV. Ang swerte nga naman ng mina,

Sa nickel na may pera,

Sa huli,baka magsisi ka

V. Mag isip isip naman sila,

Kalikasan ay mahalaga,

Itoy biyayang bigay

Sa atin ng Maykapal

I also extended my moral support to a local advocate group against mining, SAM (Sibuyanons Against Mining) through regular posting in my blogsite and my personal appearance in a mass rally against this destructive operation in 2007. Last April 2010, I took part in our annual community fiesta celebration where I was the chairman of the panel of judges for Mother Nite contest and coronation. I also vounteered as photographer of the event and prepared the powerpoint presentation of the candidates.
