A Year of Sundays: 1st Installment
By Mary Ann Reilly
26 Dec 2010
A few months ago, I set about documenting Sundays—with a book in mind: A Year of Sundays. Since that time I have made photographs each Sunday and am beginning to study them in order to better understand and represent the idea and practice of Sundays.
While committing to this work, I have come to learn a bit about my creative process. At the center of creativity is discipline and commitment. I am not sure I would have named either a decade ago, even though each would have been true at that time too. Through the ritual of making photographs each week, my work grows. I have begun to trust that it is in interpreting what is common--what is in front of me so often, that art is made.
Most of these images have been made in New York City, mostly Harlem and in New Jersey, mostly Paterson. Without question, I am drawn to cities.
I will post more of the project as I make progress.
