Invisible Self Portrait "Challenge" Opportunity
22 Apr 2011
Have you ever wanted to disappear? To melt into the wall and take a more candid shot, to have better camouflage than a camelion, or simply to dissolve like steam?
I recently was reading Invisiblephotographer.asia and noticed their challenge to create an Invisible Self Portrait in whatever way seems appropriate to you. I was inspired to try my own hand at this and of course I couldn't just stop at one. I actually started a flickr group just for Invisible Self Portraits. Feel free to join in the fun there as well: flickr.com/groups/invisibleselfportraits
I am now taking the opportunity to challenge myself. I will take one new Invisible Self Portrait per week in May, 2011. If people joined in much like we did with Penny's "Empty Spaces" theme a while back, that would be excellent!
If you would like to join in, the rules are simple:
1. Comment on this story with"I'm in!" so we can encourage each other and be inspired by each others work, and so that those participating can link to your Invisible Self Portrait each week in the description of our own photos
2. Interpret the idea of "Invisible Self Portraits" and take your own (take at least one per week)
3. Choose one a week to upload to jpgmag.com
4. Label each clearly such as "Invisible Self Portrait Week 1"
5. Link to others taking this challenge in the description of your photo.
6. Have fun! (well that's not really a rule just a suggestion)
I will be starting this "Challenge" May 1st to celebrate Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day, and it would be great to have others simultaneously doing so, but whenever you join in is fine. Ask yourself what is a Self Portrait and what does invisible mean? Use whatever camera and gear you like as long as you can upload it to jpgmag.com, and join me in taking this opportunity to get creative!
Here are some examples of my take on Invisible Self Portraits up till now. They are both digital and film, pinhole and otherwise. Some are double exposures, others are cross processed, and a couple are light paintings. You can find other ideas on InvisiblePhotographer.asia and flickr.com or by typing "Invisible Self Portrait" into Google, so don't let these few ideas limit you. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I enjoyed creating them and will be inspired to play with the idea as well.
