Introducing Our New Family Member Gabriel Patrick Lewis

Gabriel Patrick Lewis

My grandson, Gabriel Patrick Lewis, was prematurely born on July 22nd almost a month early (he was due on August 15th). He weighed in at 5 lbs 2 oz. He is a beautiful down syndrome baby born with Transient Myeloproliferative Disorder (Definition - A group of slow growing blood cancers, including chronic myelogenous leukemia, in which large numbers of abnormal red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets grow and spread in the bone marrow and the peripheral blood). Until his system can kick in with the correct platelet, red and white blood cell level he has to be monitored regularly the only medical help at present are blood transfusions of which he has had 4 to date, we hope that we have seen the end of them.

Gabriel was in the Intensive and Medium care for 17 days and then came home to a jubilant family.

At present he has to be monitored by the hematologist weekly to make sure that his blood & platelet counts do not exceed the lowest allowable level. He will have to be closely monitored for leukemia for at least the first 3 years of his life.

He is breast feeding, but due to his illness he gets very sleepy so Karen has to pump and give her milk in bottles during his sleepy periods so that she can make sure that he has been sufficiently fed. He has to be fed every 3 hours at present. He now weighs 7 lbs 2 oz.

Despite it all he is a very strong and alert little baby. His brothers adore him and shower him with kisses and eagerly help with anything that needs to be done for him.

Gabriel is a lucky little boy to be born into a family who cares deeply and are devoted to bringing him through any crisis in his life. He has a close and committed family and is surrounded by love.

Touching does not begin to describe this story. Family can be a source of so much that is good and meaningful in life. Thankfully Gabriel was born into yours. You all can only grow in these circumstances. Best wishes and much luck.

What a heartwarming story of little Gabriel and all the love and care he has been born into. He is such a beautiful little boy......and God sent him to the finest, most adoring family He could find. What a blessing this child is to all of us. I can imagine how dearly your own family loves him and treasures him. Thank you so much, Sonia, for introducing us to little Gabriel. I hope you will continue to post his portraits and keep us updated on his progress. God bless each of you!!!

Sonia, he is so beautiful and so alert! By looking at him one would not suspect that he has had so many physical problems already. He is gaining weight rapidly, and growing so fast. It is amazing what love can do, isn't it? What a sweet blessing he is, and so fortunate to have a family with so much love for him. My prayers are for his continued progress, and robust health.
