Introducing Our New Family Member Gabriel Patrick Lewis
27 Aug 2011
My grandson, Gabriel Patrick Lewis, was prematurely born on July 22nd almost a month early (he was due on August 15th). He weighed in at 5 lbs 2 oz. He is a beautiful down syndrome baby born with Transient Myeloproliferative Disorder (Definition - A group of slow growing blood cancers, including chronic myelogenous leukemia, in which large numbers of abnormal red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets grow and spread in the bone marrow and the peripheral blood). Until his system can kick in with the correct platelet, red and white blood cell level he has to be monitored regularly the only medical help at present are blood transfusions of which he has had 4 to date, we hope that we have seen the end of them.
Gabriel was in the Intensive and Medium care for 17 days and then came home to a jubilant family.
At present he has to be monitored by the hematologist weekly to make sure that his blood & platelet counts do not exceed the lowest allowable level. He will have to be closely monitored for leukemia for at least the first 3 years of his life.
He is breast feeding, but due to his illness he gets very sleepy so Karen has to pump and give her milk in bottles during his sleepy periods so that she can make sure that he has been sufficiently fed. He has to be fed every 3 hours at present. He now weighs 7 lbs 2 oz.
Despite it all he is a very strong and alert little baby. His brothers adore him and shower him with kisses and eagerly help with anything that needs to be done for him.
Gabriel is a lucky little boy to be born into a family who cares deeply and are devoted to bringing him through any crisis in his life. He has a close and committed family and is surrounded by love.
