Out Walking: A Sort of Crusade
By Mary Ann Reilly
4 Nov 2011
It is a bit difficult to properly explain why simply walking, sauntering--needs to be a key method to occasion learning. At a time when busy busy busy and faster faster faster seems to be the mode of work, slowing down to make enough empty space in which to learn may seem frivolous and even perhaps, unnecessary.
I want to suggest walking about may be the most necessary action we make.
For so long we have mistakenly privileged being well educated with knowing explicit knowledge, the type one learns at school or through books. Yet, there is also tacit knowledge: when you know more than you can say. Learning walks occasion tacit knowledge and are essential practice for photographers.
The images shown here were made while walking. During these walks, trees were the focus.

Awesome story - thank you. I have always been of the opinion that walking is as crucial to my creativity and sanity as air is to my survival. Beautiful images! Love your work!
